When you hear the word strength, what comes to mind? For most women, it's about pushing through, holding it all together, taking care of everyone else, meeting those endless deadlines, solving problems, and being the one people can count on no matter what.

But after working with women for more than three decades, I've learned there's so much more to the story.

The strongest women I know aren't just mentally tough. They're physically capable, mentally resilient, emotionally grounded, and deeply connected to what matters most. And summer? It might just be the perfect season to strengthen all four of these dimensions.

Whether you're 35 and crushing it in your career but feeling completely disconnected from your body, 50 and focused on simply getting through each day without falling apart, or 65 and finally ready to thrive instead of just survive, this conversation is for you.

And let me be clear from the start: this isn't about looking good in a bikini or fitting into your favorite pair of jeans.
This is about feeling powerful in your own skin. This is about reclaiming the kind of strength that carries you through whatever life throws your way.

The Four Dimensions of Summer Strength

Here's what I've discovered after years of working with women: wellness isn't one-dimensional, and the women who feel most confident and energized aren't just focusing on heart health or strength training in isolation. They're building what I call "integrated strength", a foundation that supports every single area of their lives.

Think of it like this: you can have the strongest house in the neighborhood, but if it's built on a shaky foundation, it's still vulnerable. Your strength works the same way.

Physical Strength: Can your body support the life you want to live?

This goes way beyond what happens in the gym. It's about having the energy to keep up with your favorite people (kids, grandkids, spouse, friends…) without feeling wiped out for days afterward. It's about the stamina for that dream vacation you've been putting off. Most importantly, it's about the deep confidence that comes from knowing your body won't limit your choices or hold you back from the experiences that matter most to you.

Mental Strength: Can you stay flexible when life doesn't go according to plan?

Let's be honest, life rarely goes according to plan. Mental resilience isn't about being tough all the time or never feeling overwhelmed. It's about bouncing back faster when things get hard, adapting to change with grace instead of falling apart, and maintaining your sense of self when everything around you feels chaotic.

Emotional Strength: Can you trust yourself and your body again?

After years of putting everyone else first, so many women lose touch with their own needs and intuition. You start second guessing everything, what your body needs, what you actually want, even what you deserve. Emotional strength means reconnecting with that inner wisdom that's been there all along and learning to prioritize your own well-being without drowning in guilt.

Spiritual Strength: Can you stay connected to what matters most?

This isn't necessarily about religion, though it can be. It's about maintaining perspective when the world feels like it's spinning too fast, staying grounded in your values when everything else feels uncertain, and nurturing the relationships and activities that truly fulfill you rather than just fill your calendar.
Summer offers a unique opportunity to focus on these four areas because the season itself invites renewal, energy, and connection.

Which Type of Strength Needs Your Attention This Summer?

Take a moment to honestly assess where you are right now. There's no judgment here, just awareness. Sometimes the most powerful step forward is simply recognizing what needs your attention most.

Ask yourself:
  • Is my body getting stronger, or is it simply getting by?
  • When I talk to myself, do I sound like an encouraging friend or a harsh critic?
  • Do I really trust my body to tell me what it needs?
  • Am I creating space for joy, purpose, and connection, or just squeezing them in when everything else is done?
Your answers will point you toward where to focus your energy this season. Maybe it's one area that stands out. Maybe it's a combination. Maybe you're not sure yet, and that's okay too.
The goal isn't to fix everything at once. The goal is to start somewhere that feels both important and doable for you.

The Physical Foundation

While all four dimensions deserve attention, here's what I've witnessed: when you start caring for your physical health, even with small, consistent actions, something profound begins to shift.
Your energy improves. Your confidence grows. Stress becomes more manageable. Life starts to open up a little wider.

It's not just about the physical changes, though those matter too. When you nourish your body properly and move it regularly, you're strengthening your emotional resilience and mental clarity. The woman who stays hydrated and incorporates both cardio and strength training isn't just supporting her cardiovascular system, she's managing stress hormones, supporting brain function, and building steady energy that helps her show up fully for everything that matters.

This is especially crucial for women (and men) over 40.

Here's what many don't realize: strength training is just as important for heart health as cardiovascular exercise.
Building and maintaining muscle mass supports your metabolism, protects your bones, and strengthens your heart in ways that walking alone can't achieve.

For Your Heart & Muscles: Summer Workout “Snacks”

Think "workout snacks", short bursts of movement sprinkled throughout your day that keep your heart, muscles, and circulation engaged without requiring a formal workout.

Simple Summer Strength Builders:

During a backyard barbecue:
Grab a volleyball, soccer ball, or frisbee and spend 5-10 minutes playing with family or friends. You'll be surprised how quickly your heart rate rises when you're having fun, and how you'll rediscover muscles you forgot you had by morning.

On your neighborhood walk:
Every few minutes, pick a mailbox, tree, or streetlight in the distance and power walk to it. Pump your arms and pick up your pace for 30-60 seconds, then settle back into your comfortable speed. Feeling adventurous? Try walking lunges instead.

At the pool:
Walk or jog through the shallow end for 1-2 minutes. The water adds gentle resistance while reducing stress on your joints.

For Hydration: Start your day with water before coffee…before anything.  Keep a water bottle visible. Add cucumber or lemon if plain water feels boring.

For Sustained Energy: Prioritize protein at breakfast and that doesn't have to be limited to eggs. Oatmeal with nuts, smoothies with hemp and chia seeds, greens in an omelette or a quinoa bowl.

There are more options than you think. Choose foods that sustain you rather than spike and crash your energy.
The goal isn't perfection or hour-long gym sessions. It's consistency in small things that compound over time into real strength, the kind that supports every area of your life.

A Summer Permission Slip

You do not need to overhaul your life this summer.
You do not need to train harder, do more, or prove anything to anyone.
You do not need to earn your vacation or your rest.
You do not need to shrink yourself to fit into anyone else's idea of who you should be.

What if your only goal this summer was to
become stronger in the ways that matter most to you?
What if that was enough?

This summer, don't focus on becoming a different woman. Focus on becoming a stronger version of the woman you already are.

Strong enough to carry your dreams forward.
Strong enough to weather whatever challenges come your way.
Strong enough to trust yourself and your body again.
Strong enough to fully participate in your life instead of just managing it.

Because here's what I know to be true: strength isn't measured by a number on a scale or how many miles you can run. It's measured by the freedom, confidence, energy, and joy you bring into each day.

That's the kind of summer strength that changes everything.
